December 2021

Aloha Kakou

As we mark a year and nine months since the global pandemic temporarily closed our Hokulani
Imaginarium and the Center For Aerospace Education, it is important to reflect on what transpired.
While we missed seeing our patrons in person, we developed on-line resources such as Hokulani
Tonight with Dan Collura and Star Stories, animated short video stories featuring Asian and Hawaiian
star stories.

The Imaginarium was upgraded and now uses a Definiti Fulldome projection system, made up of two 4K laser projectors, six channels of digital surround sound, and 360-degree LED covelights.  Its graphics are created by a network of computers controlling the DigitalSky planetarium software suite.  These computers render its graphics at a rate of 60 frames per second, (fps) much smoother than the 24 fps or even 48 fps seen in cinemas. And, the screen wraps completely reaching around your head, giving more directions to look than even an IMAX theater. In addition, special effects projectors around the Imaginarium re-create such dazzling celestial phenomena as the Aurora Borealis, fireball-like meteors and eclipses.

With all that being said nothing replaces coming to the Imaginarium to see a full dome
show. For that reason we are so happy to announce that two perennial favorites, Season of Light and Star of Bethlehem are back at a special $5 flat rate - our gift to you.

Of course we know we are not out of the woods yet with the pandemic and for that reason we have a
required mitigation plan in place. If you wish to read the entire Mitigation Plan see the link below.
The Mitigation Plan requires protocols for the Imaginarium as follows:
  • Reservation are required along with proof of vaccination and a photo ID.
  • Please call 808-235-7350 for reservations.
  • Better yet email
  • Provide your name, address, email, telephone #, the date and time of the show you wish to see and
  • the number of tickets you wish. We can only seat people together in groups of 5 to promote social distancing.
  • Seating will be limited to promote social distancing to a max of 44 seats per show.
  • Seats will be assigned. A seating chart is provided on the attached link. As you reserve your
  • seats you will be told the row and number of the seat/s so that you can see the seat location on
  • the seating chart that will be uploaded to our web site or on the link provided here.      Link
  • Payment will be made on the day of the show at the ticket booth.
  • No credit card payments are taken CASH and/or CHECK ONLY
  • (here is the link to the full Mitigation plan).

We know this is a departure from the Imaginariums's operations. Bear in mind these departures are
required and aim to keep everyone healthy, wealthy and wise, at least healthy and wise. We hope to
see you soon for:

Season of Light is a family friendly, visually rich show about the darkest and coldest time of year, winter. The show explains why we have seasons and traces the origins of many of the world’s most enduring customs from Christmas trees to the Hanukkah Menorah, Santa to the Star of Betlehem.

Friday, January 7, at 7:00p.m. (doors open at 6:30p.m. for seating) and
Saturday, January 8, at 1:00p.m. (doors open at 12:30 p.m. for seating)
For those who thought that Christmas was over, Epiphany, celebrated on January 6, marks the final celebratory day of the Christmas holiday season and celebrates the visit of the Magi. Star of Bethlehem explores some of the astronomical possibilities for the Star that guided Wise Men to Bethlehem.  The show also recounts the story of the Wise Men–who they were, where they came from and why a Star could so entice them to embark on such a journey to a foreign place.
